Every Day Sayings

Recommended Posts

Have you ever wondered where certain phrases come from?

These same phrases are commonly used yet often times we do not give them a second thought as to their true meaning

The United States, to a large degree, is a post Christian nation

Our "representatives" and "judiciary" have done everything to remove God, Christ and the Bible from most every aspect of government under the guise of political correctness

However these same phrases that are commonly (and not so commonly) used have roots that can be traced the the very thing that the PC community is trying to remove

For example:

A leopard cannot change its spots:

This is used to speak of someone who, apart from the Lord, cannot change their bad ways and habits

Here is it's origin

"22 You may ask yourself, "Why is all this happening to me?" It is because of your many sins! That is why you have been raped and destroyed by invading armies.

23 Can an Ethiopian change the color of his skin? Can a leopard take away its spots? Neither can you start doing good, for you always do evil." (Jeremiah 13:22-23 NLT)

Something to ponder

"The blind leading the blind"

It's usage is usually in reference to someone who thinks they know what they are doing in a particular situation, when they really do not, yet are encouraging others to go the same (wrong) way

Jesus used this phrase to describe the false religious leaders who did not know the Truth about God and His Word yet would wrongly teach others

"10 Then Jesus called to the crowds and said, "Listen to what I say and try to understand.

11 You are not defiled by what you eat; you are defiled by what you say and do."

12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, "Do you realize you offended the Pharisees by what you just said?"

13 Jesus replied, "Every plant not planted by my heavenly Father will be rooted up,

14 so ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch."" (Matthew 15:10-14 NLT)

"Nothing but skin and bones"

"By the skin of their teeth"

Many are familiar with the travails of Job.

According to Scripture, Job was blameless and upright

As a result, Satan want to get his hands on Job by explaining to God "Of course Job is that way, You (God) bless him with wealth. Take that away and he'll curse you"

As you know the rest of the account, Job goes through extreme circumstances under God's watchful eye and ultimately is restored

If you are not familiar with Job, it can be an encouragement to those facing difficulty

This is a "two-fer" today, seeing as these both appear in the same passage

Someone who is very thin can be referred to as nothing but skin and bones and one who barely escapes perilous circumstances escapes them by the skin of their teeth

"19 My close friends abhor me. Those I loved have turned against me.

20 I have been reduced to skin and bones and have escaped death by the skin of my teeth." (Job 19:19-20 NLT)

By the way, do not take these passages at face value. Open up a Bible and see if these sayings are really in there

"A little bird told me..."

We need to be careful backbiting and speaking ill of others because they'll find out and cause you the embarrassment of having to explain yourself

When you grumble against others, shouldn't you perhaps take a close look at your own life and examine what is causing that bitter spirit?

Ecclesiastes 10:20 (New Living Translation)

20 Never make light of the king, even in your thoughts.

And don`t make fun of the powerful, even in your own bedroom.

For a little bird might deliver your message

and tell them what you said.

Thanks Seeking! These have been a blessing to read. Just think many sayings have Biblical origins and many people use them unknowingly.

Looking forward to more of these.

Thanks!

"Pure as the driven snow"

or

"White as snow"

Both are used to indicate someone's innocence or more specifically ones moral integrity

From a Christian standpoint everyone is less than perfect yet, because of the finished work of Jesus on the Cross, you can have your sins forgiven once and for all

""Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool." (Isaiah 1:18 NKJV)

""Come now, let us argue this out," says the LORD. "No matter how deep the stain of your sins, I can remove it. I can make you as clean as freshly fallen snow. Even if you are stained as red as crimson, I can make you as white as wool." (Isaiah 1:18 NLT)

"The writing is on the wall"

"Knocked kneed"

"You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting"

Seeing as I may not have time tomorrow to get this done, I'll "double down" today

This will be a "three-fer" because, in the context of the account, there are a few phrases that are worth sharing

The writing is on the wall, they were so scared their knees knocked together and You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting;

The first phrase is used to say judgment is imminent or the obvious results of bad choices will occur

Belshazzar , the son of Nebuchadnezzar, decided to have a big party

His mistake was to take what had been set apart (holy) for Temple worship and use them in a manner unfit for the things of God

At the party, When Belshazzar saw this hand writing, he became extremely afraid to a point of uncontrollable shivers and he collapsed

"Then the king`s countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his hips were loosened and his knees knocked against each other." (***** 5:6 NKJV)

When no one could figure out what was written on the wall, Belshazzar offered a reward to anyone who could interpret the writings

***** was able to interpret the writing and told Belshazzar the following

"24 "Then the fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written.

25 "And this is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

26 "This [is] the interpretation of [each] word. MENE: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it;

27 "TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting;

28 "PERES: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians."" (***** 5:24-28 NKJV)

Basically, Belshazzar, you are done

Notice though, there was still a chance for Belshazzar to repent even after defiling the things of God

There was the sin and then an event that immediately followed that should have scared Belshazzar to his knees in repentance

As you will read in the account, when ***** was called and he began to speak, Belshazzar did something that indicated a complete lack of repentance

"19 "And because of the majesty that He gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. Whomever he wished, he executed; whomever he wished, he kept alive; whomever he wished, he set up; and whomever he wished, he put down.

20 "But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him." (***** 5:19-20 NKJV)

If you are going through difficult times as a result of bad choices, God will give an opportunity to change direction before judgment

It's up to you what you do with the opportunity

This one went a bit long...

Here's the entire account of this, as found in ***** 5, if you wish to review

"1 Belshazzar the king made a great feast for a thousand of his lords, and drank wine in the presence of the thousand.

2 While he tasted the wine, Belshazzar gave the command to bring the gold and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple which [had been] in Jerusalem, that the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them.

3 Then they brought the gold vessels that had been taken from the temple of the house of God which [had been] in Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines drank from them.

4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze and iron, wood and stone.

5 In the same hour the fingers of a man`s hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king`s palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

6 Then the king`s countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his hips were loosened and his knees knocked against each other.

7 The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke, saying to the wise [men] of Babylon, "Whoever reads this writing, and tells me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple and [have] a chain of gold around his neck; and he shall be the third ruler in the kingdom."

8 Now all the king`s wise [men] came, but they could not read the writing, or make known to the king its interpretation.

9 Then King Belshazzar was greatly troubled, his countenance was changed, and his lords were astonished.

10 The queen, because of the words of the king and his lords, came to the banquet hall. The queen spoke, saying, "O king, live forever! Do not let your thoughts trouble you, nor let your countenance change.

11 "There is a man in your kingdom in whom [is] the Spirit of the Holy God. And in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and King Nebuchadnezzar your father""your father the king""made him chief of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, [and] soothsayers.

12 "Inasmuch as an excellent spirit, knowledge, understanding, interpreting dreams, solving riddles, and explaining enigmas were found in this *****, whom the king named Belteshazzar, now let ***** be called, and he will give the interpretation."

13 Then ***** was brought in before the king. The king spoke, and said to *****, "[Are] you that ***** who is one of the captives from Judah, whom my father the king brought from Judah?

14 "I have heard of you, that the Spirit of God [is] in you, and [that] light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you.

15 "Now the wise [men], the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing and make known to me its interpretation, but they could not give the interpretation of the thing.

16 "And I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations and explain enigmas. Now if you can read the writing and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple and [have] a chain of gold around your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom."

17 Then ***** answered, and said before the king, "Let your gifts be for yourself, and give your rewards to another; yet I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

18 "O king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom and majesty, glory and honor.

19 "And because of the majesty that He gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. Whomever he wished, he executed; whomever he wished, he kept alive; whomever he wished, he set up; and whomever he wished, he put down.

20 "But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him.

21 "Then he was driven from the sons of men, his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling [was] with the wild donkeys. They fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and appoints over it whomever He chooses.

22 "But you his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, although you knew all this.

23 "And you have lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven. They have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which do not see or hear or know; and the God who [holds] your breath in His hand and owns all your ways, you have not glorified.

24 "Then the fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written.

25 "And this is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

26 "This [is] the interpretation of [each] word. MENE: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it;

27 "TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; 28 "PERES: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians."

29 Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed ***** with purple and [put] a chain of gold around his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

30 That very night Belshazzar, king of the Chaldeans, was slain.

31 And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, [being] about sixty"two years old." (***** 5:1-31 NKJV)

"Wheels fall off"

"Between a rock and a hard place"

Have you ever had the "wheels fall off"?

This refers to having a situation that you thought was working then unexpectedly and suddenly falls apart

There's also another phrase that might have it origins in the same account speaking about being "between a rock and a hard place"

That's having to make a decision between two tough choices

Often this will happen when someone makes plans in their own strength apart from the Lord

Where there are a couple options usually between doing it Gods way or on your own

Even in those situations the Lord will give you a choice, though it looks impossible, the circumstances prevent you from going the other way and you are required to step out in faith

This is the case with the Jews that were being pursued by the army of Pharaoh

They escaped slavery in Egypt and once Pharaoh realized that his workforce was gone went after them with the intent to return them to captivity

Pharaoh had been asked time and time again to allow the People of God to go and was shown multiple miracles to convince him to do the right thing

Instead of heading the pleas of Moses, Pharaoh hardened his heart to a point that God began to harden his heart

We pick up with the account where Moses was lead to camp between the Sea and a mountain fortress (Migdol)

There was only one way into this area and one way out

Pharaoh cut the people off from retreating back the way they came leaving the sea as their only escape route

Not much of a choice when you have a few million people and no boats

The people were truly stuck between a rock and a hard place and began to panic

"11 Then they turned against Moses and complained, "Why did you bring us out here to die in the wilderness? Weren`t there enough graves for us in Egypt? Why did you make us leave?

12 Didn`t we tell you to leave us alone while we were still in Egypt? Our Egyptian slavery was far better than dying out here in the wilderness!"" (Exodus 14:11-12 NLT)

and Moses reminds them

"13 But Moses told the people, "Don`t be afraid. Just stand where you are and watch the LORD rescue you. The Egyptians that you see today will never be seen again.

14 The LORD himself will fight for you. You won`t have to lift a finger in your defense!"" (Exodus 14:13-14 NLT)

Then Moses asks the Lord for direction

"15 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving!

16 Use your shepherd`s staff""hold it out over the water, and a path will open up before you through the sea. Then all the people of Israel will walk through on dry ground." (Exodus 14:15-16 NLT)

The people move across to safety and again Pharaoh had one last huge miracle to hopefully change his mind

Unfortunately, in his blind pride, Pharaoh followed after them and that's where the real difficulty began

"23 Then the Egyptians""all of Pharaoh`s horses, chariots, and charioteers""followed them across the bottom of the sea.

24 But early in the morning, the LORD looked down on the Egyptian army from the pillar of fire and cloud, and he threw them into confusion.

25 Their chariot wheels began to come off, making their chariots impossible to drive. "Let`s get out of here!" the Egyptians shouted. "The LORD is fighting for Israel against us!"" (Exodus 14:23-25 NLT)

By that time it was too late and they were cut off

"27 So as the sun began to rise, Moses raised his hand over the sea. The water roared back into its usual place, and the LORD swept the terrified Egyptians into the surging currents.

28 The waters covered all the chariots and charioteers""the entire army of Pharaoh. Of all the Egyptians who had chased the Israelites into the sea, not a single one survived." (Exodus 14:27-28 NLT)

To the Christian facing difficult situations, the Lord is on your side but will use extraordinary circumstances to bring you into a greater understanding of who He is

To the non-Christian: fighting against the Lord...turn back before it's too late

"A wolf in sheep's clothing"

It's been quite a challenging week and sorry for not posting any phrases for a bit

What is it to be a wolf in sheep's clothing?

The phrase is used to describe someone that gives the appearance of being something that they are not

From the context, it would also indicate a willful attempt to deceive

Jesus used this phrase to speak about false prophets and their desire to willfully deceive people (sheep)

Sheep are not very bright and prone to wandering and getting into trouble

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus uses the illustration of sheep and shepherd to describe His relationship to the people

A shepherds job is to protect and provide for the sheep where all others are in it more malevolent reasons

Hopefully we're not quite as physically vulnerable as sheep, but can be when it comes to spiritual matters

The wolf has no concern for the sheep other than to make them dinner and the false teachers are no different

They "are ravenous wolves." (Mt 7:15b NLT)

The false teachers are in it for personal gain such as

"46 "Beware of these teachers of religious law! For they love to parade in flowing robes and to have everyone bow to them as they walk in the marketplaces. And how they love the seats of honor in the synagogues and at banquets.

47 But they shamelessly cheat widows out of their property, and then, to cover up the kind of people they really are, they make long prayers in public. Because of this, their punishment will be the greater."" (Luke 20:46-47 NLT)

The only defense the sheep has, is to look to the Shepherd for provision and protection

""But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." (Matthew 6:33 NKJV)

If you are looking Anywhere else (self or man-made religion) you will not survive

"15 "Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep, but are really wolves that will tear you apart.

16 You can detect them by the way they act, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit. You don`t pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles.

17 A healthy tree produces good fruit, and an unhealthy tree produces bad fruit.

18 A good tree can`t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can`t produce good fruit.

19 So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire.

20 Yes, the way to identify a tree or a person is by the kind of fruit that is produced." (Matthew 7:15-20 NLT)

"An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth"

People will often quote this passage (out of context) to justify treating someone badly after they have done wrong

The contextual meaning is to give a fair basis for restitution if someone transgresses

Also, the meting out of judgment is not for the offended individual to carry out

Often those who are transgressed against want to take matters into their own hand and "repay" another and usually not equably

Jesus expands upon the passage in Matthew 5

"38 "You have heard that it was said, ˜An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.`

39 "But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

40 "If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have [your] cloak also.

41 "And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.

42 "Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away." (Matthew 5:38-42 NKJV)

Furthermore, ultimately God is the one who is to be the Judge of all

"35 Vengeance is Mine, and recompense; Their foot shall slip in [due] time; For the day of their calamity [is] at hand, And the things to come hasten upon them.`

36 "For the LORD will judge His people And have compassion on His servants, When He sees that [their] power is gone, And [there is] no one [remaining], bond or free." (Deuteronomy 32:35-36 NKJV)

To the Christian: you really do not deserve anything other than judgment and Hell but, because of the price He paid for you, there is mercy and forgiveness

How can you hold someone responsible for usually small transgressions when you have been forgiven so much?

"21 Then Peter came to Him and said, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?"

22 Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

23 "Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.

24 "And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.

25 "But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made.

26 "The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, ˜Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.`

27 "Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.

28 "But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took [him] by the throat, saying, ˜Pay me what you owe!`

29 "So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, ˜Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.`

30 "And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt.

31 "So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done.

32 "Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, ˜You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me.

33 ˜Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?`

34 "And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him.

35 "So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses."" (Matthew 18:21-35 NKJV)

This is not to say one should become a "doormat"

However, the next time you want to rush to "repay" someone when they have wronged you, allow the Lord to work it out and do as His Word prescribes

"Going the extra mile"

Have you ever gone the extra mile?

In popular culture, going the extra mile speaks about someone making an extra effort when it was not required for them to do so

What does in mean from the context in Scripture

The illustration is found in Matthew 5

""And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two." (Matthew 5:41 NKJV)

From the cultural context, the Jews were ruled by the Roman government

The Jews really didn't like the rule of the Romans, but they had little choice in the matter

In addition, and at any time, a Roman soldier could conscript a citizen to assist in carrying their gear for up to a mile

What Jesus was teaching to the people was to do good, in fact "extra good", to those whom you do not like

If someone asks you for help, do not do the bare minimum to get by, but go beyond that as a witness to them

Jesus expands on the idea more in verse 46

"46 If you love only those who love you, what good is that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much.

47 If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that." (Matthew 5:46-47 NLT)

To those who say they are "Christians" yet only "help" friends and family (nash) at the exclusion of all others, what does that benefit...?

Even the pagans help their own

"Here's Mud In Your Eye"

Now I may be taking some license with this one, but here's one possible origin seeing as I cannot find a definitive source

The phrase is usually given a toast of celebration

To those who, at one time, maybe "toasted" a bit too much, you many have experienced some of these symptoms

"29 Who has anguish? Who has sorrow? Who is always fighting? Who is always complaining? Who has unnecessary bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?

30 It is the one who spends long hours in the taverns, trying out new drinks.

31 Don`t let the sparkle and smooth taste of wine deceive you.

32 For in the end it bites like a poisonous serpent; it stings like a viper.

33 You will see hallucinations, and you will say crazy things.

34 You will stagger like a sailor tossed at sea, clinging to a swaying mast.

35 And you will say, "They hit me, but I didn`t feel it. I didn`t even know it when they beat me up. When will I wake up so I can have another drink?"" (Proverbs 23:29-35 NLT)

and one more possible side effect....Impared vision

There's an account in the Bible, found in John 9, that tells about another with impared vision

"1 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.

2 "Teacher," his disciples asked him, "why was this man born blind? Was it a result of his own sins or those of his parents?"

3 "It was not because of his sins or his parents` sins," Jesus answered. "He was born blind so the power of God could be seen in him.

4 All of us must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent me, because there is little time left before the night falls and all work comes to an end.

5 But while I am still here in the world, I am the light of the world."

6 Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and smoothed the mud over the blind man`s eyes.

7 He told him, "Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" (Siloam means Sent). So the man went and washed, and came back seeing!" (John 9:1-7 NLT)

Jesus is the Only One who is able to restore the sight to the blind, both physically and Spiritually

The false religious leaders did not want to acknowledge this fact then and even now are unwilling

They were more concerned about Jesus doing this miracle on the Sabbath in violation of their rules then praising Him for the work

"24 So for the second time they called in the man who had been blind and told him, "Give glory to God by telling the truth, because we know Jesus is a sinner."

25 "I don`t know whether he is a sinner," the man replied. "But I know this: I was blind, and now I can see!"" (John 9:24-25 NLT)

Through this miracle, the once blind man's life was transformed

"35 When Jesus heard what had happened, he found the man and said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"

36 The man answered, "Who is he, sir, because I would like to."

37 "You have seen him," Jesus said, "and he is speaking to you!"

38 "Yes, Lord," the man said, "I believe!" And he worshiped Jesus." (John 9:35-38 NLT)

The false religious leaders had witnessed a miracle yet would not give credit where credit was due

"39 Then Jesus told him, "I have come to judge the world. I have come to give sight to the blind and to show those who think they see that they are blind."

40 The Pharisees who were standing there heard him and asked, "Are you saying we are blind?"

41 "If you were blind, you wouldn`t be guilty," Jesus replied. "But you remain guilty because you claim you can see." (John 9:39-41 NLT)

Are you still blind...?

Acknowledge the One who can make you see
