Check, Check, And Checked?

Question: When was the last time you (or your spouse) had a complete physical - with blood work and everything? A fitness stress test?

 

Question: What are your cholesterol levels at?

 

Question: How is your blood pressure these days?

 

Question: What is your BMI? Are you at your ideal weight for your gender and height? What is your body fat percentage?

 

Question: Are you at risk for heart disease or a heart attack?

 

Question: How healthy are you - really?

 

These are some things that we busy adults do not think of that often, especially if we are "feeling okay" or feeling good. Think about these questions and act! Do it for yourself and for your loved ones!

Uh....never and never.

Dunno.

 

Question: How is your blood pressure these days?

 

I think that it's low...90 over 60. (Is that low?)

 

Question: What is your BMI? Are you at your ideal weight for your gender and height? What is your body fat percentage?

 

Dunno (What's a BMI?).....NO.....percentage?! There's a percentage!

 

Question: Are you at risk for heart disease or a heart attack?

 

Yes. Many of my family members have died from heart disease.

 

Question: How healthy are you - really?

 

Good question.

A complete physical with extensive bloodwork is a good idea for anyone over 30 or 35. This would give you an idea of where your health is on paper and if you need to make any lifestyle changes when it comes to nutrition or fitness.

 

Sounds like your blood pressure is good.

 

If there is any history of heart disease in your family, it would be a good idea to get the physical and bloodwork done to see where your cholesterol levels are at.

 

A person can look perfectly healthy on the outside - even physically fit and be eating half way decently and have horrible cholesterol numbers - it can be a wake up call. The good thing is that if the numbers need improvement - it can be done (changes in nutrition and exercise are the first and best way to improve the numbers before taking the pharmeceutical chemical way - a lot of doctors will write out a prescription for cholesterol medication without blinking an eye).

 

As far as "BMI" or body fat percentages go, you can check out the cdc website keep in mind it does not differentiate between male or female or muscle mass if the individual is extremely athletic. There are some cool scales on the market from Tanita that calculate body fat percentage (available at Linens N Things or Bed Bath and Beyond).

 

The important thing is that you know where you are and wether or not you need to take any action to get yourself and your loved ones "in check".

I am having several tests done in September.

 

Stroke/Carotid Artery Screening.

Abdominal Aortic Aneursm Screening

Peripheral Arterial Disease Screening

and because I am woman.....Osteoporosis Screening.

 

Heart disease and stroke run big time in my family. I've been going to the gym 4-5 times a week since May and have been watching what I eat.

 

I hope this will help me in the long run!
