Fall And Winter Are Upon Us - Don't Hibernate!

Recommended Posts

Cooler weather is here - that means long pants and long sleeved shirts or sweaters for most of us. That makes it easy to camouflage a couple of extra lbs under a sweater or a sweatshirt.

Anyway - the holidays are around the corner - that means the schedules may get a bit more hectic and, of course, exercise and eating habits may not be changing for the better.

Remember to make time for cardiovascular exercise at least 3 or 4 times a week. It may be a good idea to procure a pedometer for yourself and for each of your family members - the goal is 10,000 steps per day.

If you have a scale, hop on every other day - that is a good way to keep yourself in check - it works even better if you hop on in front of someone and keep tabs on eachother. If you do not have a scale - it would be a good idea to get one.

Beware of treats that lay about innocently. A piece of candy here, a cookie there, and hey!, whoa, where did that extra 2 inches come from on the poosah? (I am speaking from experience - I am trying to work myself back into a pair of really small dress pants from last winter before this winter gets here..) If you indulge in these sweet little nothings on a daily or every other daily basis - they can creep up on you.

Be careful with the family celebratory meals, too. They are so good. Extra bread, buttery mashed potatoes, stuffing, yams, gravy and all the trimmings can really pack a caloric punch. Try a little bit of everything, as not to offend the hostess (mad totsyas or bunyas are no fun..). If you are serving yourself, put a lot of green salad on your plate first (careful with too much dressing) and then go for a bit of lean turkey, some green veggies, and go easy on the rest of the stuff. When it comes time for dessert, just have a small piece of whatever it is - no need to sample everything on the dessert menu.

Another handy tip would be to skip or alternate dinner 2 or 3 times a week during the holidays - instead of having the regular meal, have a small salad, a piece of fruit, or a small bowl of cereal with lowfat or nonfat milk, or just have a cup of decaf tea and nothing else and go for the gusto!.. (a little detox is good for everyone once in a while..)
